Tezz from Live Events pulls off an amazing evening of entertainment…Tezz presents the event

On Saturday 18th April Live Events student Terriane Goodwin (Tezz to you and me) put on a charity gig in memory of her friend Alex Jackson at Brighton Youth Centre in Kemp Town.  Running from 7pm – 9pm the event wasn’t just your regular gig; she had a five-a-side football tournament, table tennis and a table of activities for the youngest attendees, as well as acoustic performances from Jack Woodhouse and James Thorpe! She also made a 17-page memorial book for people to write their memories in throughout the evening and a photo frame for Alex’s girlfriend. The event raised an incredible £222.25 split between the intensive care unit at Brighton Royal Sussex, ‘You raise me up’, a charity that supports families who have lost a loved one.

Tezz organised, marketed, set up and ran this event herself with a huge amount of skill and expertise. She even hosted it on the night, introducing each section, making sure it ran on time, performed her own rap and delivered a speech – incredible! When asked what her inspiration for the event was she said “I wanted to bring his family and friends together and raise money for the intensive care unit and the charity You Raise Me Up. His favourite sports were table tennis and football so I thought it would be great to have an event which incorporated them.” The event was advertised with a suggested donation of £2/3 for entry and Tezz estimates that 60 – 70 friends, family and well-wishers came along, all donating more than the suggested amount.

It wasnJack and James get acoustic’t all plain sailing though, she managed to set off her Mum’s pacemaker with a burst of loud music (don’t worry, she’s fine now) and there was no winner in the football tournament! “They had got down to penalties but no one seemed able to score and we were about to run late so they just decided to stop and come and listen to the music” Tezz explained. The event was mainly promoted through Facebook and word of mouth with Brighton Youth Centre giving her the venue for free, so it was a testament to how much can be done with little to no budget. Thinking about what might be next Tezz said “I’d like to do something else that has the same variety – sport, music, games etc. – to keep it interesting. One of the footballers wrote to me asking when the next one is so that’s promising!”

After studying a Music Production Level 2 course with Dv8 last year Tezz decided to explore the world of Live Events and seems to have found her true calling. Working for Poets vs. MCs has given her loads of experience to build on outside of college and she is already eyeing an apprenticeship with them when her course finishes. In addition Brighton Youth Centre have also asked her to run some events for B:Fest after being suitably impressed by the memorial evening. Tezz summed it up by saying “I feel really proud of the event. It was really rewarding to raise lots of money for the charities and speaking to his Dad made me feel like I’d done a really good thing. I’m going to get a portfolio from ASDA and put in all the pictures from the event and receipts from the charities so I can remember it but also to help me get a job in the industry. I can’t wait to fill it with the next events I’m going to do!”
Table tennis was provided!
Everyone at Dv8 would like to say a huge well done and congratulations to Tezz for doing something so amazing for such a good cause. We can’t wait for the next one!
