Last week our aspiring fashion designers were incredibly busy! They received a very special visit from Brighton based designer Jess Eaton and held a fashion exhibition on their first months project.
The course’s very first brief was to create innovative and wearable trashion garments and accessories from used goods and items that would essentially be considered rubbish. Jess Eaton was invited into Dv8 Sussex as a guest to speak with our students about her experiences and knowledge of working in the fashion industry and specifically with trashion. Jess spoke in detail about her struggles and challenges that as a designer she faced when first starting out. She spoke about the financial side of her job and how she chooses not to go commercial with her designs even though potentially it could earn her more money.
After all of the talking had been done, to our fashioners surprise, Jess was eager to get round to everyone’s trashion design, see what they’ve been working on and offer feedback and new techniques they should try!
Here are what some of our students said:
“Jess was very hands on and was eager to help out with our garments and show us alternative ways of going about things. She was full of hints and tips and eager to see our final products.
I got to spend some one on one time with Jess where she advised me to scrap a part of my outfit (the skirt) and start it again using a different material; although it cost me extra hours the skirt turned out a lot better. I guess I just needed to be thrown in the deep end in order to get the creativity flowing.
To anyone who has the opportunity to meet Jess, I advise them to take it, she’s massively inspirational!” – Emelia Kinsey
“When Jess Eaton visited, it opened up a whole new side to ‘trashion’. It showed and inspired me that you could literally make something beautiful out of something you throw away everyday! Hopefully in the future I have the chance to redo this project, I would love to try out more materials like Jess Eaton.” – Gabriella Summers
After the excitement of Jess coming in and the girls making final adjustments to their trashion designs, they opened up an exhibition of their work for all students and parents to come in and see. For just a month’s worth of work, what they have achieved is incredible! Take a look at the flair of creativity!
If you’re aged 16 – 18 and thinking you’d love to get involved in some of this, you can! We have one place remaining on our Fashion course, it’s not too late to apply!
