Harrison Jones with Rob Starr

(Harrison Jones with the founder of Starr Trust, Rob Starr)

A number of our Dv8 Production students, last month, applied for the Edward Starr Trust Award. A charity who are able to grant up to £5000 for young people to help fulfill their potential and provide training and development opportunities, and happily two of the learners were successful in their applications. Lucy Gething (Media Level 1) and Harrison Jones (Media Level 2) both had their requests granted which was fantastic news.

Lucy applied to the trust in order to obtain media equipment and specialist software that will allow her to study outside of college and pursue her passion in film. Alongside this, Lucy has also recently started attending a project run by the BFI (British Film Industry) in London, so the award will go a long way to help cover some of the travel costs.

Lucy commented, “I feel really lucky to have found my passion in life – when I do media it’s like I go into my own world and I can focus and feel like I am achieving something. I’ve never felt this way about any other subject before, and I get a sense of pride and happiness”.

And as if one success story wasn’t enough, we have Harrison Jones who has really proven himself on the course and within his creative field after contributing to 500px and receiving nearly 1000 hits within a couple of days.  With this grant, Harrison has the chance to obtain a MacBook Pro enabling him to study and work on his projects independently. He will have access to up to date photo editing software which will enhance his digital editing skills and give him the boost towards becoming a professional photographer with industry standard skills.

Harrison said of his award “I am so happy about being given this opportunity as I feel it will really help me progress with my photography”.

The Starr Trust is a fantastic charity based in Brighton whose mission it is to encourage and support young people to fulfill their potential either financially, through training, connections and mentoring.

Congratulations  Lucy and Harrison!
