Season Greetings to everyone!

We are delighted to have welcomed everyone back to Dv8 for a new academic year and we are particularly pleased to have everyone back on site in Bexhill and Brighton. It has been fantastic to continue working with students that were with us last year, as well as so many new students to Dv8.

To spread the Christmas cheer, we wanted to share with you a tradition of ours which is our annual Christmas cover, which can be found here!

A big thank you and well done to Neil Emery for putting this together and to all the students and staff who were involved!

We will be sending out our second set of student progress review reports on January 21st and this will be followed by parents evenings in Brighton on Tuesday February 8th and Bexhill on Wednesday February 9th. Further details on this will follow immediately after the Christmas break.

Very best wishes,
Jim (j.sharpe@londonlc.org.uk)

Vocational Team Update

I would like to thank our learners and teachers for all their efforts this term, especially as this is the longest unbroken period of study for nearly 2 years. We can look back on the term with a good sense of accomplishment, from induction through to the commencement of assessment.

Our focus has been on using the first half term as a “soft start”, allowing learners to “get their bearings” at DV8 and build some core skills before embarking on formal work. As a result, there is a real sense of community in the classrooms and around Dv8 and learners have been observed to be very confident explaining what they are working on and proud of their learning.

Assessment deadlines for the term have just occurred and some excellent work has been produced across all the music, media and games courses. Results of this assessment will be formal by the end of the 1st week of January.

In the new year, we need to keep a focus on good attendance, following the lead of several courses that have done very well in Term 1. We will also step up our linking of vocational studies to planning for work experience placements.

Finally, we have relaunched our “Structured Support”, a chance for our students to get further help with all aspects of their academic/vocational work. We have drop-in sessions at lunchtime and are able to offer more bespoke packages on request. Please get in touch should you want to find out more.

As always, if you do have any questions regarding any aspect of our vocational courses, please do not hesitate to contact Kieran at k.mahon@londonlc.org.uk.

English & Maths Team Update

Firstly, please accept seasonal greetings from the English and Maths team, and I do hope you all have a restful and relaxing break over the festive period.

At the start of this term, we were busy with initial assessments, making sure that we have our students on the right course and learning aim, and making sure that we have a clear picture of our students' starting points for this academic year. With not all our students undertaking English and Maths qualifications last academic year, this has been a little more difficult to achieve, so thank you to everyone for their patience in this matter.

Over the last half term, students have been working hard and have just completed assessment work. This will be marked prior to term end and students will receive feedback on their return after the break. This will also be followed up by a parent's evening, which will take place early in the new year.

With regards to Functional Skills, we have already had our first round of exams for both English and Maths, and we will share the results with all the students concerned as soon as we receive them.

Finally, if you have any questions, queries, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Dave at d.pine@londonlc.org.uk.

Student Services Update

This term learners have been focusing on the theme of ‘Keeping Safe’ during Personal and Social Development and have explored a number of different aspects to this - keeping themselves safe online, being safe from sexual harassment, abuse, and violence, and protecting themselves from extremist thinking or groups.

This builds on the 3 rules of Dv8 which are “Be Safe, Be Ready and Be Respectful”, which we feel very strongly are central to a successful learner journey and transition to adult life.

Talking of transitions, some of our Level 3 Year 2 students have been starting to research and make plans for what they will go on to do after Dv8. Some will choose to progress to university, others may feel more suited to an employment pathway or apprenticeship or some may even want to try to combine both and find a Higher Apprenticeship.

Advice and support to help make plans for the future is always available to learners and should any student or parent/carer have any questions or need any help in this area please do contact Nicola at n.lombardo@londonlc.org.uk

Finally, Friday 10 December saw Dv8 celebrate Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Save the Children to usher in some Christmas spirit whilst raising money for a good cause. There is still time to donate, so if you would like to make a donation please go to our Just Giving page here.

Learning Support Team Update

Season's greetings from Learning Support, we hope you and your family are well as we get nearer to the end of 2021. We have had a great time supporting our students learning and making sure that everyone feels comfortable in college.

I am delighted to share that clubs will be continuing after the break. The details are below:

In Brighton

Wednesday (3:30-4:30) Games

Thursday (3:30-4:30) Music

Friday (3:30-4:30) Film

In Bexhill

Thursday (3:30-4:30) Music

Friday (3:30-4:30) Film

Any students that are interested can ask a member of staff for more details or check out our posters throughout the college.

We have also enjoyed getting our Life Skills provision underway. This has included seeing the sites of our local area while helping our students develop their confidence and independence. We have big plans to get out further into the community, so please keep an eye on announcements!

When we resume in January, we will be looking to get examination access arrangements underway and assessed. This will not be relevant to all of our students but if access to your exams is a concern, please seek a member of Learning Support out to assist.

We hope you and your family have a wonderful break and here's to a great new year! If you have any questions, queries, or concerns regarding our Student Support provision, please do not hesitate to contact Si at s.morley@londonlc.org.uk.

Centre Management Team Update

Covid-19 Update

We would like to thank all our staff and students for their hard work over this past term ensuring that we are able to operate as safely as possible during this uncertain time.

In our continued effort to keep everyone safe, we ask all to continue testing at home over the Christmas break. If you need more LFT testing kits please come to one of the centres to collect them. Alternatively, you can order these online. You can also find more information about our response to covid-19 on our dedicated webpage.

Huge congratulations to all of our students of the term.

Rufus is one of the Get Into Games students and has produced exceptional work. Their pixel art is already game-ready, and they apply themselves totally to art tasks.

Music - Joe G
Excellent attendance, hard-working, always making extra music, and an excellent manner in the classroom.

Media - Ryan T
Ryan has done remarkably well. He has been doing a lot of independent work and putting so much effort into not only his practical work, which is very creative but has also persevered with his writing skills.

Maths - Louis E
Louis is a great student. He always listens to advice and demonstrates a keenness to learn and do better. Louis always completes his independent learning work on time and is a pleasure to teach!

English - Tiffany B
I am nominating Tiffany as English student of the term because of her commitment, enthusiasm and hard work. She always demonstrates a positive attitude to learning and she is also keen to help her peers. Tiffany takes advice and feedback on board in order to improve her learning and she is always extremely polite and courteous.

From everyone at Dv8, we hope you all have a wonderful Christmas break.

Kind regards,
Dv8 Sussex Team
