Exciting times are afoot for Dv8 Sussex’s Bexhill music students as a series of industry lead events began last week. Staying true to Dv8’s belief that the best teachers are those who do what they teach, these events are all designed to give Bexhill’s future music stars a chance to meet and learn from people working in the industry.
Sofa Sessions
Dv8 Bexhill’s unique space inside a disused church provides plenty of opportunity to explore creativity in different spaces and settings. Students may find themselves capturing the perfect vocal sound in the corner of the chapel or practising their next gig in the hall on the ready-made stage. On Tuesday 11th November that stage was curtained off and the hall was filled with sofas to create a relaxed forum for two exciting guests to impart their wisdom and offer advice. Students armed with fresh tea and coffee took their seats and welcomed the arrival of the legendary UK hip hop artists DJ Skitz along with the amazing Tasha, UK manager of Celebrity Talent Agency’s highly impressive line-up of artists. Skitz and Tasha told the students about their journeys through the music industry, before students asked some searching and insightful questions. The event was live tweeted and left everyone involved a little more clued up and excited to continue working towards their goals in the industry.
Future Sofa Sessions look set to include promoters, music journalists, record label bosses, stylists, video makers and branding experts as no stone is left unturned in the musical education. Who knew sitting down with a cup of tea could be this informative!
The Last Post
As if DJ Skitz’s contribution to our first Sofa Session wasn’t enough, on Monday 17th November he began an exciting new letter writing project called The Last Post. For the project each student will work on writing a letter to imagined local soldiers at the WWI front, the letters will then be delivered to the Bexhill War Memorial on National Letter Writing Day (Sunday 7th December) and performed locally for an audience of their peers on the Thursday 18thDecember.
Overseen by Skitz, workshops will also feature acclaimed spoken word artist Hollie McNish alongside Rapper Inja, who will deliver spoken word, creative writing and performance sessions. There will also be a special workshop by cutting edge MC Harry Shotta. A local trip to a museum for inspiration, arts awards sessions and guest demonstration sessions culminating in each young person writing and performing their own work.
We’ll keep you updated as to everyone’s progress on this exciting project and can’t wait to hear and read some of the end results.
