We recently caught up with Marcus, AKA Kidzie at our Bexhill centre for the low-down on his Dv8 journey! Our rising Hip-Hop star has been with us for over two years and in that time learnt, produced and performed his tracks with a deep passion and love for music. Read on for Marcus’s story…
My name is Marcus Murphy and my stage name/producer name is Kidzie. I’m 18 and very influenced by old school hip-hop. I was interested in enrolling at Dv8 because I heard from my friends that it’s the best music college around. Once joined I soon realised that Dv8 was a very good college and place to be.
Over the last two years I’ve studied a Level 2 & 3 Music Production course, and I’ve recently enrolled on to a extended course which can get me into University if that’s where I choose to take myself. I love music, I always have and I always will. I find it inspiring to hear and witness a new musician with a unique essence/style because that’s where I started in the first place. I thrive to be different and stand out from the crowd.
Studying at Dv8 has helped me achieve wonderful things such as performing on two separate occasions at De La Warr Pavilion which is a very highly rated & respected venue in my local area. I’ve also supported Rodney P! For those of you who don’t know the name Rodney P, he was one of the first ever rappers to rap with a UK accent. So to rap along side him and have some deep conversations was an absolute pleasure!
I’ve learnt so much from Dv8. Just some of the many things include producing, recording properly and being able to give it a pre master and mix just so it sounds that little bit better. Now as fun as this all sounds, it hasn’t been an easy journey for me. Putting music aside, Dv8 have taught me quite a few life lessons as well. They have helped me become the person I am today and I wouldn’t have been able to do that without them.
I work with a friend called Intruda/Rebbellion and together we have made some rather unique songs. See I love old school hip hop which is about 90-100 BPM but Intruda LOVES EDM trap/grime which is 120-160 BPM. So together with our influences we tend to clash a lot but because our genres are so opposed, they often compliment each other! We’ve got 4 E.P’s coming out soon as well so watch out!
I’ve got one solo E.P which is going to include my most recent material and lyrics on. I’m also bringing out a collaboration E.P which will have a new artist on EVERY track, and I’m also giving artists the opportunity to put any of their own solo songs on it to increase their publicity. Intruda is bringing out an instrumental E.P featuring his most recent material which will show his producing side to everyone – not many people know he’s producing a lot more now.
