Hey guys! For those of you who don’t know, my name is Adam and I’m Dv8’s very own Social Media & Digital Marketing Apprentice. Seeing as it’s A Level results day (hope you all get what you’re expecting!) and GCSE results soon approaching, I thought I’d share a little bit of my last year’s experience with you as I was in your shoes a year ago.

I went to BHASVIC to study Media, Maths, Computing and complete an Extended Projects in Culture. I didn’t do badly with my A Level results, but I wasn’t sure 3 years of University on a course that I was undecided about was for me. So I started to look into alternatives surrounding the areas that I am interested in pursuing a career – digital and media related. Which is when I came across Apprenticeships and specifically Dv8’s pathway. A couple of months after my results, with the help of the Dv8 Apprenticeship team I landed myself a job here as the Marketing Assistant.

Getting an Apprenticeship in general instead of going to University has been the best decision I have made. The experience and knowledge that I have gained from 8 months as an apprentice is far greater than I had ever anticipated. Not only am I paid for full time employment in a creative organisation, I get a Level 3 qualification out of it too. Just some of what my responsibilities include are:

–          Creating engaging and shareable content for the website – includes capturing images and video content

–          Managing our social media accounts and creating a social media plan

–          Attending school visits, fares and events to talk with groups of students about our courses & Apprenticeships

–          Being a part in the recruitment process – data entry, contacting applicants

–          Arranging to attend and be part of events with other organisations

–          Communicating over phone and emails about all aspects of Dv8 Sussex

–          Creating ad sending E-letters to our database of networking contacts

–          Manage and update the Dv8 website

–          Research and keep on top of all the latest digital happenings

–          Regularly have an input into the design and content of the marketing materials

The roles and responsibilities I have, have not only improved my communication and technical skills, they’ve developed my confidence, persistence and self-belief massively. This is with help from the warm and lovely staff that only want to help develop me as a person for the future.

If I could give all of you just one piece of advice after looking at your results and considering your next step in life, it would be just to give an hour to research into Apprenticeships. You can go to University at any point in your life whereas an Apprenticeship you are unable to. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you find.
